Your X164 GL-Class has a cabin that still feels expensive because Mercedes built it that way. That is not because your GL is unusually difficult or because every installer is trying to scare you. The X164 uses a fiber-optic audio architecture that was premium technology in its day. It sounds good, integrates multiple factory modules, and keeps the dashboard clean. It also does not play nicely with the universal aftermarket audio world.
The good news: you do not have to choose between living with CDs and tearing apart a perfectly good Mercedes interior.
Why X164 GL-Class COMAND Fights Aftermarket Upgrades
Most car stereos of the era use familiar copper wiring. Power comes in, speakers connect to the back of the radio, and an installer can replace the head unit with a modern touchscreen. Simple enough.
Many X164 GL-Class models equipped with COMAND use the Mercedes MOST network – Media Oriented Systems Transport. That network moves digital audio and control information through fiber-optic cables. Instead of one radio directly feeding every speaker, the COMAND unit communicates with components around an optical loop. Depending on the vehicle’s equipment, that loop can include the amplifier, CD changer, phone module, satellite radio tuner, navigation hardware, or other modules.
That design is exactly why the factory system can feel so cohesive. It is also why a bargain double-DIN radio cannot simply plug in and take over.
A fiber-optic loop expects the right modules to be present and communicating. Remove one piece without handling the loop correctly, and the system may lose audio entirely. You can wind up with a powered-up screen, a working-looking radio, and no sound from any speaker. That is a frustrating place to be after the dash has already been disassembled.
The factory amplifier is not a normal amplifier
In a conventional system, an aftermarket radio can send speaker-level or RCA audio signals to an amplifier. In a MOST-equipped GL, the factory amplifier commonly receives digital audio through the fiber network. It is not waiting for ordinary analog speaker wires from a new head unit.
Making an aftermarket unit work can require interface hardware, custom wiring, retained-accessory solutions, amplifier integration, and careful module handling. Some installs can be done well. But they are not cheap, quick, or invisible. That does not make COMAND bad. It means the smart upgrade path is usually integration, not replacement.
The Real Problem Is Not Bluetooth
Bluetooth itself is easy. Cheap adapters prove that every day. The hard part is getting clean digital-quality audio into the factory system without noise, without a clunky screen mount, and without treating the X164’s dashboard like a donor car.
FM transmitters are the usual first attempt. They are cheap, available everywhere, and often disappointing. You are sending audio from your phone to an unused FM frequency, then asking a factory radio to receive it through a crowded radio band. Static, hiss, weak bass, drifting frequencies, and interference are part of the deal. No Static! No Hiss! is not a luxury claim when you own a premium SUV. It is the baseline.
Auxiliary-input workarounds can be better, but not every X164 configuration has a useful factory AUX input, and a dangling cable is not exactly a modern solution. More importantly, neither approach properly addresses hands-free calling, factory controls, or the need to preserve the original look.
The owner is not asking for a science project. They want to get in, start the GL, play music from their phone, take a call, and keep the cabin looking like a Mercedes cabin.
The Better Approach: Add a Compatible Source to the MOST System
For the right X164 configuration, a vehicle-specific Bluetooth integration kit works by communicating with the factory audio system in the language it expects. Rather than replacing COMAND, the kit is designed to act as an accepted audio source on the optical network.
That matters because the factory head unit stays in place. The factory display stays in place. The controls you already know remain where Mercedes put them. Your audio is routed through the original system instead of being pushed through an FM signal or a questionable universal adapter.
With the right kit and correct configuration, you can select the added source through the factory interface, stream music wirelessly, and use hands-free calling without turning the center console into an aftermarket showcase. This is preservation-first modernization. The truck keeps its character, but it stops acting like 2008 every time you want to hear a new album.

It should also avoid the usual universal-adapter nonsense: vague instructions, questionable sound quality, random connection drops, and a microphone cable routed like an afterthought. Your GL-Class was a serious luxury vehicle when it was new. There is no reason to install an upgrade that makes it feel cheap now.
The installation process still deserves respect. Fiber-optic systems are not the place for impatient guessing. Follow vehicle-specific instructions, handle fiber connections carefully, and avoid disconnecting or rearranging modules just to see what happens. If you are not comfortable accessing the relevant factory connection point, a competent installer can help. But the hardware should be designed for the vehicle, not invented on the fly in the parking lot.
Keep the Parts That Make the GL Feel Like a GL
The X164 has aged into something worth preserving: a big, capable Mercedes with a properly designed interior, a strong road-trip personality, and an audio system that was sophisticated for its time. Its fiber-optic COMAND architecture is the reason upgrades are more selective than they should be, but it is also a reason not to attack the dashboard with a universal radio kit.
Choose the upgrade that respects what is already there. Then your GL can keep its factory face, keep its factory sound, and finally play the music you actually want to hear.
