A clean C6 can hide expensive neglect, and a dirty one can be a genuinely solid car that simply got driven the way Chevrolet intended. Your job is to separate cosmetic drama from the stuff that can turn a dream Corvette into a garage ornament.

The C6 is a seriously good buy when you get the right one. It is fast, usable, and still looks right parked next to much newer machinery. But these cars are old enough now that condition, maintenance history, and previous-owner decisions matter more than whether the badge says base, Z51, Grand Sport, Z06, or ZR1.

Start With the Paperwork, Not the Paint

Before you fall for a color, ask for service records, the VIN, and a cold start. A seller with a stack of invoices does not automatically have a perfect car, but records show whether somebody treated the Corvette like a real machine instead of a weekend prop.

Look for regular oil changes, brake fluid service, coolant service, transmission and differential fluid changes, tire dates, and receipts for known repairs. On a manual car, clutch and hydraulic-system documentation is especially valuable. On an automatic, ask whether the transmission fluid has ever been serviced and whether it shifts cleanly hot and cold.

Run the VIN through a history report, but do not let a clean report end the investigation. Minor damage, track incidents, curb strikes, and questionable repairs do not always make it onto a report. Check for open recalls too, particularly the 2005-2006 roof-panel recall. A proper repair is fine. An unresolved safety recall is not something to shrug off.

Inspect the C6 Body and Structure Like a Skeptic

Fiberglass and composite panels do not rust like steel, but that does not make C6 bodywork cheap or simple. Look down the sides of the car in direct light. Inconsistent panel gaps, mismatched paint texture, overspray on weatherstripping, and a bumper that sits slightly proud can point to collision repair.

Open the hood, hatch, and doors. They should operate cleanly without rubbing, sagging, or needing a hard shove. Check the underside of the front bumper and lower air dam for scraping. Some scuffs are normal on a low Corvette. Cracked panels, broken mounting points, and loose undertrays are a different conversation.

Pay close attention to the headlights. Cloudy lenses are common, but moisture inside a lamp or a non-working headlight motor needs an explanation. C6 headlight motors are a known weak point. Listen for clicking after the lights are switched on or off. That infamous repeated click is usually a stripped gear, not the end of the world, but it is a bargaining chip and one more repair on your list.

Check the Roof, Hatch, and Weatherstrips

Remove the targa top if the car has one. Inspect the roof seals, latch areas, and edges for damage. Water leaks can lead to musty carpets, electrical weirdness, and interior trim damage. Check the rear hatch glass and its surrounding trim for separation, cracks, or signs of previous resealing.

A coupe should feel tight over rough pavement. Rattles happen in older sports cars, but a car that sounds like loose hardware in a coffee can deserves a closer look.

Under the Hood: Check the Engine You Are Actually Buying

Most C6 Corvettes are powered by versions of the LS V8, and that is good news. These engines are tough, parts support is excellent, and sensible maintenance goes a long way. Still, do not confuse a durable engine family with permission to skip inspection.

Start the car cold. It should fire promptly, settle into a stable idle, and avoid drama from the exhaust. A little valvetrain noise can be normal on an LS. Heavy ticking, knocking, smoke, or a persistent misfire is not. Watch the exhaust at startup and after a hard rev once warm. Blue smoke suggests oil consumption. White smoke that persists after warm-up can indicate a cooling-system problem.

Look for oil seepage around valve covers, the oil pan, rear main area, and front cover. Minor sweating is common on an older car. Fresh oil dripping onto the driveway is not. Check coolant condition and look around the water pump, radiator, and hoses for dried coolant residue.

For 2006-2013 base cars with the LS3, and especially for modified cars, ask what tune, camshaft, intake, headers, or forced-induction parts are installed. Mods are not automatically bad. Bad tuning, hacked wiring, missing emissions equipment, and no documentation are bad. A stock-ish Corvette with records is often the safer play than a mystery build claiming 600 horsepower.

Z06 and ZR1 Buyers Need a Higher Bar

If you are shopping for a C6 Z06, do not skip a professional pre-purchase inspection with a compression test and leak-down test. Early LS7 engines are associated with cylinder-head and valve-guide concerns. Not every LS7 has a problem, and plenty have lived long, hard, healthy lives. But this is not the place to trust a seller saying it runs great.

Ask whether the heads have been inspected or replaced by a reputable shop and get the paperwork. A ZR1 deserves the same seriousness, plus close inspection of the supercharger system, intercooler circuit, carbon-fiber body panels, and expensive carbon-ceramic brake components. The cheap ZR1 is usually cheap for a reason.

Transmission, Clutch, and Driveline Checks

Drive the car long enough to get everything hot. A quick lap around the block tells you almost nothing. The six-speed manual should shift without grinding, especially into second gear, and the clutch should engage predictably without slipping under full-throttle acceleration. A high clutch pedal, chatter, fluid leaks, or difficulty selecting gears can mean hydraulic trouble, clutch wear, or transmission work.

Automatic cars should shift smoothly and consistently. Pay attention to delayed engagement when selecting Drive or Reverse, harsh shifts, flares in engine RPM, or shudder under light throttle. Some transmission behavior can be fluid or calibration related. Some of it is the beginning of a costly bill. Do not guess.

Listen for clunks when taking up throttle, shifting, or transitioning on and off the gas. The C6 transaxle layout means driveline noises can be more noticeable than in a typical front-engine car, but excessive clunking, whining, or vibration needs diagnosis. Check the differential area for leaks and ask when its fluid was last changed.

Suspension, Brakes, Wheels, and Tires Tell the Truth

A Corvette can look pristine at rest and feel exhausted on the road. On the test drive, find a rough section of pavement and listen for knocks, squeaks, wandering, or steering play. Worn control-arm bushings, ball joints, wheel bearings, and shocks can make a C6 feel loose and cheap. It should feel planted, direct, and confidence-inspiring.

If the car has Magnetic Selective Ride Control, test every mode. Replacement magnetic shocks are not bargain-bin parts. Look for leaks and ask whether any dampers have been replaced. A non-Magnetic car has simpler, less expensive shock options, which may matter if you are building a street car rather than preserving a loaded example.

Inspect all four tires, including their date codes. A Corvette with deep tread on ten-year-old tires is not ready to enjoy. Uneven wear on the inner edges can reveal alignment issues, worn suspension pieces, or a car that spent time lowered badly. Check wheels for curb damage and cracks, particularly on cars wearing oversized aftermarket wheels.

Brakes should pull the car down straight without vibration or a soft pedal. Examine rotor condition, pad thickness, and calipers for leaks. Track use is not a deal-breaker, but it raises the standard for records. A tracked Corvette with disciplined fluid changes, brake work, and inspection receipts may be a better buy than a low-mileage car that sat untouched for years.

Do Not Ignore the Cabin and Electronics

C6 interiors wear in predictable places: driver-seat bolsters, door pulls, center-console lids, climate-control buttons, and the steering wheel. Wear itself is not a crime. It should make sense for the mileage. A supposedly 30,000-mile car with a shredded driver bolster and polished controls deserves questions.

Test every electrical function you can reach. That means windows, locks, mirrors, seat adjustments, HVAC, gauge cluster, radio, steering-wheel controls, power telescoping column, hatch release, key fobs, and both headlights. Make sure the air conditioning blows cold and the heat works properly. Electronics can be annoying to diagnose when a previous owner has added questionable alarms, audio gear, or wiring splices.

The factory stereo is part of the C6 experience, especially in an uncut, well-kept interior. If modern audio is on your list, keep the factory look intact instead of letting somebody butcher the dash for a generic screen and a nest of wiring. That is the whole point of owning a future classic properly.

Pay for a Real Pre-Purchase Inspection

Even if you are handy, get the car on a lift at a Corvette-savvy shop before money changes hands. A proper inspection can reveal underbody damage, fluid leaks, worn bushings, hidden crash repairs, and engine or transmission concerns that a driveway inspection cannot settle. On a Z06, compression and leak-down numbers are cheap insurance.

The best seller will not be offended by this. They will expect it. If they refuse a reasonable inspection, will not allow a cold start, or keep inventing reasons the car cannot be driven, walk. There are more C6 Corvettes out there.

Buy the one that has been loved in the boring ways: fluids changed, tires dated, repairs documented, wiring left clean, and problems handled before they became stories. That kind of Corvette lets you spend Saturday driving it instead of explaining to your friends why it is still on jack stands.
